Mortlake's Emergency Plumbers

This small riverfront peninsula started life as a workingmen's village around the old gasworks, long before anyone thought of it as a place to live by choice. Once the gasworks site closed, redevelopment from the 1990s onward brought a wave of townhouses and riverfront apartment blocks.

Today the two eras sit side by side on streets like Tennyson Road and Hilly Street. The older pre-1940 cottages that survived the gasworks era are the ones we get called to most for hot water.

Long-owned houses like these commonly still run original or ageing hot water systems. A cold snap is often what finally finishes one off, with zero warning beforehand.

Those same older streets also carry ageing galvanised and earthenware pipework that's simply outlasted its working life.

Under seasonal ground movement, that old pipework can burst outright rather than developing the kind of slow leak you'd notice early. Two different plumbing stories, one team on call for either.

When it's the hot water system, hot water repair sorts the units failing overnight in the older cottages. When a line finally gives way, burst pipe repair is the fix, on Hilly Street or anywhere else nearby.

1. Flexi-hose bursts in the newer units. So much of the modern apartment and townhouse stock here runs on braided lines behind the cabinetry, and one letting go floods a unit before anyone's aware.
2. Stormwater surcharge on the low peninsula. Heavy rain combined with a high Parramatta River tide can surcharge stormwater drains here, flooding ground-level properties on the lowest streets.
3. Slow drainage near Wangal Reserve. The reclaimed low ground near the reserve sits on a high water table, which can slow drainage on the river side of the suburb even without heavy rain.
